We really loved our room and its closeness to the beach. Being just steps from the water was a huge highlight of our stay. The free shuttle service was also a big plus, and Doug, the driver, was absolutely amazing. He has lived here his whole life, was incredibly knowledgeable, and gave us fantastic tips on how to truly enjoy Hanalei. Honestly, Doug was the highlight of the stay as far as staff goes. One downside was the condition of the beach access. There was a pine tree at the central beach entrance with a lot of debris and tiny pine cones scattered around. This made it uncomfortable to walk from our room to the beach without shoes and honestly looked unkempt. On our last day, we were unsure of the checkout time and ended up losing track of the morning while shell collecting, which is my favorite activity. When we returned, we encountered the housekeeper, who was very kind. I immediately called the front desk to ask if we could extend checkout, and the receptionist agreed to give us an extra hour, though she seemed a bit flustered. About ten minutes later, the housekeeping supervisor came by and very sternly told us we needed to leave immediately or we would be charged for every 30 minutes past 10:00. While I understand the need to prepare the room for the next guest, the tone and delivery felt threatening and left a bad taste in our mouths. Overall, there were some truly wonderful aspects of our stay, especially the location and shuttle service, but the beach upkeep and the way the checkout situation was handled made us hesitant about returning.

It's worth getting a beach facing room you can sleep with the windows open and hear the ocean and there's enough wind that it's super comfortable at night. So we could make food after going to the hanalei market. Wonderful little spot for a vacation. If you are Hardy you can walk 30 to 45 minutes to Tunnels Beach to go snorkling.

This is a wonderful place - the location, the beach, the accommodations and of course, the staff. We came for a relaxing romantic stay and we were not let down. The rooms are extremely well kept considering how close to nature you are - the lack of AC is nearly unnoticeable, especially at night. There is a wonderful sense of community between the rooms as well - any given sunset you'll see everyone on their porches enjoying the wonderful Kauai ocean views. I don't actually leave a lot of hotel/rental reviews but I had to for this one - it's just awesome. You are also extremely close to many great natural locations for hiking/sightseeing or just popping into Hanalei town for a damn good hang. The staff at Hanalei Colony resort took the time to get to know my partner and I, why we were there and went over and beyond to make our stay extremely comfortable and memorable. We'll be back - thinking of getting the entire extended family ohana there next time. Mahalo

Loved staying in this condo/resort set-up. Our unit was a stone's throw from a gorgeous beach, stunning views, and an occasional Monk seal sighting. We enjoyed having a full kitchen and access to grills, a pool, and a jacuzzi. The Day Spa was right across the parking lot, which was a bonus. We also took advantage of the free shuttle that brought us to Tunnels beach, hiking at Hanea state park, and Hanalei town for meals. The HCR rooms have no TVs which helped us take advantage of the amenities and time together. The unit is a little dated and the affects of moisture are apparent with some rust on hinges and lamps, but that didn't take away from our enjoyment. We would stay there again!

The rooms have a lot of good amenities. Don't plan on a TV. But that's ok. The double bathroom setup in most rooms works great. And having a fully working kitchen is a lifesaver here.

There are plenty of reviews for this place - mostly positive, some pretty negative. Price complaints - it’s Hawaii. If you’re looking for a free beach view, stay home and watch Survivor. It wasn’t crazy expensive (though the resort fee is a small extra gouge). Dated - Yeah, they were proudly built it ‘71 and have some personality. No AC and wooden shutters (that occasionally leak in heavy storms). Personally, I liked the character. Everything was functional and clean. Bugs - Giggle. It’s the tropics. Might as well complain about too many chickens on the island. Beach - yeah, the beach just outside the hotel, at least in the winter, not for swimming. It’s a great beach to walk on and the swimming / snorkeling Tunnels beach area is a mile away. We walked there and back without any issue. Very pretty. Unfriendly staff - Nope, all friendly in the office, though some of the grounds crew had character I think (Caddy Shack came to mind for one guy). It is almost at the end of a small windy road but it’s really a beautiful location. Hanalei is close by as are a lot of hiking options. Second time staying here and likely will again eventually.

My husband and I stayed here for a full 10 days in June. We loved every second. I will be quick to say that this resort will not be for everyone, so do your research before booking. The rooms are more of a relaxed, older cottage vibe. If you are looking for modern luxury hotel accommodations, this will not be for you. Rooms are nice and clean. They serviced our room twice over the 10 days, but were very accommodating in switching out towels any time we asked. Paying for a premium oceanfront is 100% worth it. We had the most beautiful view and the sounds of the waves drowned out any other noise from the resort. Tunnels beach is in walking distance (30-45min walk). We did a sunset walk on many nights. Besides Hanalei, the location is far from other tourists areas - we did a lot of driving back and forth. This didn't bother us, as the quiet location was worth it. We enjoyed the north shore and hanalei the most. We ate dinner once at the on site restaurant - it was good, no complaints. All in all - beautiful, relaxing, peaceful and quiet. We look forward to going back again one day!

We have traveled around the world and stayed in accommodations ranging from 1 to 5 stars but this place ranks among our favorites!!! For starters, our room sat right on top of the beach (literally). We were in room D4 and had ocean views from all the windows. The north shore was experiencing 30' waves and the sound was intoxicating! We slept with all windows and doors open and it was awesome! We did the 9 mile beach and waterfall hike up the road at Ha'ena State Park, toured botanical gardens and went on kayak/ waterfall hike. The nearby towns were charming and welcoming. We had groceries delivered to our cottage prior to our arrival so we could cook breakfast each morning before going on our excursions. The staff at Hanalei Colony was incredibly helpful in making sure we had the best experience possible. Their shuttle service was great for excursions and dining and the on-site coffee shop had tasty breakfast bagels and danishes. If you're into spectacular sunrises, cottage D-4 won't disappoint. We will return to Kauai and we will definitely return to the Hanalei Colony resort!!!
